Ozulard succeeded him as the new Emperor of Emberwind at age 33. He proved to be a just, fair and beloved ruler. For over 25 years, Emberwind prospered under his guidance.

The Witches' Curse

In the village of Nightmare Hollow lived a coven of thirteen powerful witches led by the malevolent Aleera. While Ozulard's rule had brought much prosperity to Emberwind, the witches had grown angry at being exiled from the kingdom years ago for their dark magic.Aleera was especially jealous of Ozulard's power and influence. She hatched a plan to destroy the Emperor and take control of Emberwind for themselves. Under the light of a blood red moon, the coven performed a sinister ritual in the Black Forest. They sacrificed thirteen goats and summoned the demon Beelzebub. The lord of the flies appeared in a cloud of flies and locusts. Aleera pleaded with Beelzebub, offering Emberwind as a realm for his followers of evil in exchange for cursing the Emperor. Beelzebub agreed, seeing a chance to spread corruption. He manifested a swarm of demonic bats carrying a new vampire plague. Two nights later during an annual harvest festival, the bats descended upon the capital city under cover of darkness. Ozulard was bitten while making his rounds, praying for his people's protection. Within days, he transformed into the first vampire of Emberwind as the plague ravaged the populace. The witches' curse had succeeded in inflicting vampirism upon the good Emperor. Through trickery and black magic, Aleera and her coven had helped evil take root in the once prosperous kingdom.

Vengeance of the Vampire

Over the decades, Ozulard's vampiric powers only grew stronger as his thirst for blood and vengeance intensified. He had not forgotten how the witches, led by the malevolent Aleera, had cursed him and doomed his kingdom to ruin. Ozulard used his dark magic to track the coven to their lair in the Black Forest. On a moonless night, he attacked with a swarm of vampiric ghouls and wraiths. The witches were caught off guard and quickly overwhelmed. Aleera tried to use her magic against Ozulard but he was now too powerful. With a wave of his hand, he snapped her spine like a twig. As the life faded from her eyes, Ozulard leaned in close and hissed:

if You did not commit so many wicked in my world, the devil would not send me in his place to come and take his due.. One by one, he slowly tortured and drained the witches of their blood, making them suffer as he had suffered. By the end of the night, not a single member of the coven remained alive. Ozulard had taken a bloody vengeance for their betrayal that cursed him with an immortal vampire existence.

The Plague of Emberwind

Tired of the continued wickedness and sinfulness of the humans in his kingdom, Ozulard decided it was time to deliver a punishing plague upon the land. Using his dark magic and connection to demons, he summoned a legion of plague rats and bat swarms to infest the towns and villages.Within weeks, a deadly pestilence had taken hold. People broke out in boils and lesions, coughing up blood. The sick were abandoned as family and friends fled in terror. By the end, over half the population of Emberwind lay dead in the streets.Ozulard took cruel delight in watching the chaos and suffering unfold from his castle. the humans weakened, his vampire armies were able to seize more territory with little resistance. The plague had left Emberwind more under his undead control than ever before.

Ozulard is modeled after the vampire lord Count Dracula from Bram Stoker's classic novel. It draws on the depiction of Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III) from medieval Eastern Europe.Ozulard's vampire kingdom resembles the eerie castles and vampire realm found in gothic horror tales such as Castle Dracula and Salem's Lot.
